Like some of her peers, she documents her personal life through photography, but she uses this format as a platform to express something deeper. She explores youth, friendship, sexuality, family and urban living, all in a serious yet un-dramatic way. It's clear that Touyama is observing, not performing, and her muted black and white photographs suit this tone well.
