About Book

 

サトウヒトミは長年海外でストリートスナップを撮影してきましたが、コロナ禍の時期、身近な東京の風景を捉えたスナップと、かつて旅したニューヨーク、プラハ、パリなどの風景を重ね合わせた作品を制作するようになります。本書には、それら「空想の旅」、架空の一瞬を、30点収載しました。

 

時間や場所の異なる２つの世界が接続することによって、普段は隣り合うはずのない人やものが出会い、つながるはずのない道が交差します。さらに、車窓やショウウィンドウ、傘、ディスプレイといったモチーフもひとつのレイヤーとして世界を透過・反射しながら、サトウの作品世界をより多層なものにしています。

写真という「窓」を通してまなざすことで、新たな時空間が生まれるダイナミズムを「over the window」は湛えています。

 

サトウは街のなかで、その土地に暮らす人々の姿を捉えてきました。とりわけ、気がつけば多く集まっていたという魅力的な女性たちのスナップをまとめた前作「Lady in moment」。そのエッセンスは本書にも引き継がれ、彼女たちの姿が、街や文化の機微をより際立たせていることを感じます。

 

サトウの作品世界を通して私たちは空想の旅へ出かけ、本をとじた後にも続く日常に、遊び心に富んだ新たなまなざしを持ち帰ることでしょう。

over the window

 

2020年。窓の外にぽっかりと浮かぶ雲や、時おり上空を横切る飛行機を、ぼんやり眺めては、外の世界に想いを馳せていた。

COVID-19によって、世界中の人々と同様に制限を強いられた生活の中、オンラインの会話や映画鑑賞で人恋しさを紛らわしながらも、パソコンのウィンドウ越しに広がる風景は、どこかつかみどころがないように感じていた。
そんな漠とした気持ちで過ごす日々の中、これまで巡ったさまざまな国での写真をデスクトップに広げているうちに、目の前の「今」の景色を透かし見ながら「過去」を追体験する、空想の旅を紡いでみようと思い立った。

その時間軸のずれた二つの世界は、思いがけない場面で交錯し、静かな共鳴を起こしながら重なり、まるで夢で見たような不思議な風景となっていった。まさに記憶が行き交う夢そのものの可視化だと思った。
一枚、また一枚と増えていく写真は、外界への架け橋となり、日常に新たな息吹が吹き込まれていくようだった。
2023年。この短いような、長い長い日々を、空想の旅に支えられ過ごしたことをふり返りながら、ここにまとめることができたことを、心から幸せに思う。

over the window

 

2020 :

I would often gaze absentmindedly at the clouds floating lazily outside the window and the occasional airplanes passing through the sky,

letting my thoughts drift to the outside world.

Due to COVID-19, my life, like that of people all around the world, was confined within limits.

While I tried to distract my loneliness through online conversations and movie watching,

the digital landscapes stretching beyond the computer screen felt intangible, as if they had no real substance.

Amidst these days of emptiness, on my screen, I spread out photographs I had taken during my travels in various countries.

Suddenly, I had the idea to weave a fanciful journey through these photos,

allowing myself to reexperience the past by glimpsing it behind the present scenery right in front of me.

I felt compelled to create virtual travel photos by layering images from my current reality with those from my past travels

– a blend of imaginative travel snapshots.

As I embarked on this endeavor, the timelines of these two disparate worlds converged unexpectedly, intertwining and resonating in quiet harmony,

ultimately forming a wondrous landscape akin to the scenes I'd witnessed in dreams.

It was as if I had visualized the very essence of memories intersecting and flowing like a dream.

With each photo added, the bridge to the external world seemed to strengthen, infusing new vitality into my everyday life.

2023：

Reflecting on these brief yet seemingly endless days that were sustained by my imaginative travels,

I am genuinely happy that I am able to encapsulate these experiences here.

横浜生まれ、東京都在住。お茶の水女子大学 舞踊教育学科卒業後、日本航空国際線客室乗務員として勤務。東京ビジュアルアーツで写真を学ぶ。主な写真集に『イグアナと家族とひだまりと』（N Books・2016年）、『Layered NY』（Every Photo Books・2017年）、『crossing Prague』 (Every Photo Books・2018年）など。受賞歴に、2006年キヤノン写真新世紀佳作、2019年ZOOMS JAPANパブリック賞など。最新作に『over the window』（PURPLE・2023年）がある。
